However, when things go wrong, she advises that we should simply own it and turns it into something funny or relatable for the audience. How do you find opportunities as a freelance on-air host?

Even as a seasoned freelance on-air host, she actively seeks job opportunities. While she currently works with QVC, the flexibility of her freelance status allows her to collaborate with different companies and take on new opportunities as they come.

Interestingly, she shared that while she has agents who source opportunities for her, she's found most of her recent jobs independently. She recounted a recent experience where she found an opportunity on a website, applied, and has since worked with the company on five separate occasions.

However, for those considering working with an agent, she advises caution. You should never have to pay to sign with an agent, and it's critical to do your research to ensure that you're dealing with someone reputable. Ultimately, she emphasized that forging direct relationships with companies and casting agents is possible and can lead to enduring and rewarding collaborations.

  1. Backstage.com: It's a reputable site for hosting and on-camera jobs, and many companies post their job listings there. However, there's a fee associated with using it, but it can be written off on your taxes.

  2. ActorsAccess.com: While primarily aimed at actors and commercial models, it's also a good resource for finding hosting gigs in your region. Again, there's a fee to use this service.

  3. TVJobs.com: This is the place to be if you're interested in getting into the news industry. Like the other sites, it requires payment at some point.

The fees for these websites often pay off when you land a job, and the sites also help vet the companies for legitimacy.

What is the process for auditioning?

The reel shouldn't be longer than five minutes.

This can involve filming yourself in different settings within your home, borrowing a good-quality camera, and either writing a script or transcribing one. By doing so, even without a paid job, you can present a professional reel that demonstrates your versatility and showcases your unique personality.

In many cases, standing out isn't about being perfect but about being relatable and genuine while still getting the necessary points across.
